What is kalem işi?
Türkiye Culture Portal describes kalem işi as a decorative art practised on substrates including plaster, textile, stone, leather and wood. Its scope is therefore broader than a single ceiling example. For a mosque project, a useful starting point is understanding the architecture and identifying the intended application areas together.
Consider the whole space
The main dome, smaller domes, transitional surfaces, ceilings and window surrounds belong to one architectural composition. Alongside close-up motif references, share overall views of the space. A small reference board can help the client and design team discuss colour and pattern consistently. This is a design approach, not a universal motif prescription for every mosque.
Clarify drawings and boundaries
Mark the areas included in the work on drawings or photographs. The main dome and window surrounds, for example, may need separate scope items. Explain the existing substrate condition, earlier decoration and who will approve the design. Calligraphy or commissioned artwork should be discussed as distinct requirements where relevant.
Discuss approvals early
Agree when motifs and colours will be defined, whether samples are needed and how revisions will be assessed. A historic building enquiry should not be treated as equivalent to decoration on a new surface; specialist review may be necessary. For a VELORIA ART enquiry, provide the city, application areas, approximate dimensions, photographs and preferred timing.
