Separate appearance from composition
A gold-coloured surface does not establish that genuine gold has been used. The Canadian Conservation Institute treats genuine gold leaf and brass-based imitation leaf as different materials. Asking for a golden appearance describes a visual preference; it does not settle the material specification. State explicitly if genuine gold is required.
Understand what a sample demonstrates
A sample helps evaluate colour, sheen and the overall effect. Colour alone does not verify purity. Review the proposed product description, manufacturer information and available technical documentation alongside the sample. Record the substrate preparation and finish as well, so that comparisons relate to a defined system rather than an isolated patch. An image on a screen should not be assumed to reproduce the appearance under the lighting of the actual space.
Make the quotation specific
Our planning recommendation is to describe the leaf material, desired colour and sheen, application area and preparation scope separately. Where genuine gold is proposed, confirm which product the stated purity refers to. Any finishing or protective treatment should be considered with the particular product and application conditions; there is no single coating recipe for all leaf materials.
Assess an unidentified existing finish
If the material on an existing surface is unknown, record that uncertainty. Some identification tests described by the Canadian Conservation Institute consume part of the material. Clients should therefore avoid improvised chemical or scratch tests on existing decoration. Use appropriate specialist assessment and available records. Bring photographs, earlier application information, appearance references and product documents to the quotation discussion.
Quick project checklist
- Are appearance and material requirements recorded separately?
- Is the sample linked to its product and preparation?
- Are any genuine-gold product and purity requirements confirmed?
- Are uncertainties about the existing finish recorded?
